At 11pm today I shall call time for the very last time in my life! Yes folks, if you want to see possibly the best looking barman in town ring a small red bell and shout at you, for just one more time that, no, you may not have another drink, then tonight's the night.
I wanted to publicly thank everyone I've ever worked with behind that bar over
the years - you all know who you are - Thank you.
But I want especially to single out Laine and Charlotte who've worked tirelessly
(but not, I hope, thanklessly) through my last spell at the rudder, which has
been my most difficult as I wrestled with the whys and wherefores of whether to
leave the bar. Thanks largely to the selfless way those guys have stepped in
whenever asked and worked beyond what they were paid for my last year has been
made an easier one but the decision to leave a harder one.
I will take some unforgettable stuff away with me in the form of happy, bizarre,
unrepeatable and downright hazy memories. Oh, by the way, should you ever chance
upon a slim volume in the remainder's section at Ottaker's in years to come
which bears my moniker, any resemblance the characters therein may share to your
good selves is of course entirely due to chance.
Finally, good luck to Wilb, Mark, Lucy and Matty. I'm sure there will be major
changes now this old fella has shuffled off. I did after all work for Reg way
back in the early 80's before many of my best customers were born, and have
always striven to maintain a link with the atmosphere he created. Now of course
for the first time in it's history the bar will have people in charge who have
no link to The Vine and Victuals Wine Bar as it was when Reg first opened way
back in the deep dark days of prehistory.
Sometimes, however, any organisation needs to break with it's history and traditions if it wants to succeed into a new age and I'm sure the combination of Wilb's wisdom and Mark and Lucy's youthful enthusiasm will lead to many years of success.
